The weather channel called for rain and thunderstorms at this years 2016 Donauschwaben. Instead, we had the opportunity and privilege to once again participate in the US National Donauschwaben tournament on a beautiful sunshiny Memorial Day weekend. The sun was out, the BBQ was cooking, the beer was pouring, old friends were signing, new friends were created and familiar faces were recognized that hadn’t been seen in a while.
Two time defending champions Carpathia Kickers, had their eyes set on taking home the trophy for a third year in a row. The task would be difficult playing 3 games in five hours. The Kickers came out strong Saturday morning as they opened up their tournament facing off against Chicago Kickers. John DeLeon would score first, followed by Sam Shafer to give the Kickers a 2-0 opening win. The second game was against Milwaukee Sport Club who Carpathia would meet again in the final. The teams both played hard and physical but it was Ryan Williams who slotted the ball bottom corner that gave Carpathia the 1-0 win. The third and final game was against Cleveland Concordia. Carpathia would lose 2-0 and make them 2-1 on the day.
Sunday morning had two must win games. Carpathia once again came out determined. Carpathia would play the hosts,Chicago Green and White. Two early goals scored by Joey Tinnion would give Carpathia a nice two goal lead before half time. Chris Wolowski would add another to make the game 3-0. The final game of the group phase would be against Philadelphia UGH. Another tough task for Carpathia but once again it was Ryan Williams who slotted home a ball in the bottom right hand corner to give Carpathia the 1-0 win. The final would be played against Milwaukee Sport Club. The scoring was opened up by Joey Tinnion. Then Tommy Catalno added two more to seal the deal and make Carpathia the 2016 Donauschwaben Champions.
Head Coach Bruce Wilden recapped the weekend saying “I’d first like to thank each and every “old timer” that year after year travel with us for this tournament. Your support is what helps keep the tournament going. I’d also like to thank Chicago Green and White Soccer Club for hosting us and making their club feel like our own. Lastly to the players, who showed so much determination and hard work. I look forward to the future ahead”.
Thank you to all the volunteers in this years 2016 Donauschwaben tournament. Without your generosity and hard work this tournament wouldn’t of been as successful as it was. Lets keep this great tradition going.
